Food Pantry available on the Third Saturday

Things are really tight for families right now. Don't feel bad, everyone is struggling to pay their bills and feed the family. If you need some help making the groceries stretch, there is a food pantry available on the 3rd Saturday of each month.From 10-11 a.m. bring your bags and some help, to carry the goodies home with you! The pantry is available at Wesley United Methodist Church located at 516 2nd Ave.

Benton County Historical Society Presents the Story of Billy Sunday August 21

The Benton County Society will host guest presenter historian Craig Bishop of Hutchinson, Minnesota. He will present the unbelievable but remarkable true story of Billy Sunday. The event will take place at the Vinton Depot on Sunday, August 21 beginning at 1:00 p.m. The depot is located at 612 2nd Ave. in Vinton.Billy was born near Ames, Iowa on November 19.

It’s not that the Center Point Historical Society believes the Underground Railroad quilt code myth like gospel or wants to promote historical untruths at its Aug. 28 annual Log Cabin Festival. But the excuse for a quilt display was just too good to pass up.The theme for the Sunday, Aug. 28, 2-4, free Log Cabin Festival at the Depot Museum is the Underground Railroad which helped enslaved people escape to freedom in the North and Canada before the Civil War.

The Shellsburg American Legion Saturday morning breakfast is held each Saturday. The hours are 8 - 10 am. Precision Rimfire Shooting Event, August 14, 1-5 p.m.

The Izaak Walton League is hosting a Precision Rimfire Shooting event on Sunday, August 14th from 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM. Each competitor will purchase a target card for $10. They will have 5 minutes to confirm their rifle’s “Zero” and then have 20 minutes to complete 25 single round engagements on 25 individual targets. Each target card will be scored and choices off the prize table will be in the order of best score to low score.

Kiwanis 75th Anniversary Celebration this Weekend at Kiwanis Park

On November 20, 1947, a group of local residents chartered the Kiwanis Club of Vinton with the help of the Cedar Rapids Kiwanis Club. Thirty five charter members chose Ernest Kammerer, who at the time was manager of the Vinton Palace Theatre and had worked to organize the group, as its first president. Most of the early charter members were local businessman such as: Nicholas Gavalas, Don Lane, Robert Mahood Sr.

Center Point Historical Society Log Cabin Festival August 28

On Sunday, August. 28, from 2-4 p.m. the Center Point Historical Society will hold their annual Log Cabin Festival at the Deport Museum and Strait Log Cabin, located at 700 E. Washington, Center Point. This year the presentation will be featuring "The Underground Railroad" with Jenny Barnett from the African American Museum of Iowa at 2 p.m. There will also be a Quilt display and 1850s log cabin tour.
